The Price of the Unclaimed Mate novel

The Price of the Unclaimed Mate novel

Sierra,I want the bond severed. Please help me draft the separation decree.I want to leave the territory with nothing.
After five agonizing years as Ryder Thorne's secret claimed mate,Elara Vance finally understood that the Alpha King had never marked her out of genuine devotion. She decided to demand the separation without confronting him, preparing the dissolution decree as a gruesome gift for their fifth claiming anniversary.
Even her closest confidante,Sierra, the Packs Beta, could barely believe the finality in her voice.
Immediately,Sierras eyes, usually sharp and pragmatic, clouded with doubt.Elara, have you truly felt through this decision?Five years of a claimed bond is not something you can just break so easily.
Elara lifted her head. Her eyes, usually soft and yielding, were now firm, carrying the desperate resolve of a rogue wolf.I have felt it,Sierra. This bond was a mistake from the beginning,a convenience.I will not continue to endure the silence.
A few minutes later,Sierra retrieved a document from a leather-bound foldera folder that smelled faintly of pine and damp earth, the distinct scent of the Packs official business. She handed it to Elara.
I understand. This is the Separation Decree, drafted by Mr.Weston, the Packs legal elder. He isnt here today,so he instructed me to pass it to you.You simply need to find a way to get the Alpha Kings mark on it.Also, the original territorial agreement must be clarified. The mandatory cooling-off period for a severance is three lunar cycles,so be prepared for the fallout.
Elara took the brittle parchment, the faint smell of the Packs seal catching in her throat, and nodded stiffly.Understood.
She left Sierras study and drove her dusty truck through the winding mountain roads, heading toward the Alphas main keepThe Blackwood Manor, which served as the headquarters for Thorne Industries, the Packs shell company.
When she opened the door to the Alpha Kings sprawling executive office,Ryder was seated behind his enormous mahogany desk, his focus narrowed on a digital report. He looked up,and his gazeintense, calculating, the color of molten goldmet hers.A faint, almost perfunctory smile touched his lips.
Late again,Elara?Just because youve been Claimed by the Alpha King doesnt mean you can afford to neglect your duties.
His tone was gentle, like a seasoned Betas, but his eyes carried the cold, ancient authority of the Alpha bloodline. There was no warmth,no devotion in that deep voice.
The scent barriers were down for road work.
Elara walked up to his desk and carefully slid the Separation Decree across the polished wood.
She took a slow, deliberate breath, forcing her voice to remain steadyunwavering, devoid of the fear she felt.Alpha Thorne,I just concluded a new trade negotiation with the Southern Clan. This is the contract for the Black Forest logging rights.Your mark is needed here.
Ryder reached for the document.Their hands brusheda brief, electric contact.Elaras heart hammered against her ribs, terrified he would detect the sour, deceptive scent of her lie.
But he didnt even glance at the header. He flipped to the final page and, without hesitation, scratched his powerful, sprawling signature above the line markedAlphas Mark.
Another deal sealed?Elara, your human capability continues to impress the council,he said in a relaxed, almost dismissive tone.
Watching his mark commit him to their legal separation,Elara felt a crippling paina phantom ache where their bond should have thrummed with life.
In five years of this hollow claiming, the only reason Ryder kept her close was because she was a useful, clever shield for his Pack businessnever because she was his fated, cherished mate.
Just then, his comm-link pulsed. He glanced at the screen, and his granite features softened. His voice dropped to a gentle, almost tender whispera tone Elara hadn't heard directed at herself in years.
Are you hungry,Lyra?Im stuck at the keep right now.Ill send a Beta to get you something to eat from the village, okay?
Anyone listening would assume he was talking to the woman who carried his future children.
But Elara knew the truth.
She had loved Ryder for countless seasons. They were pups together, growing up side-by-side in the sprawling Thorne Territory.
For him,Elara had abandoned her dreams of traveling, studying finance instead, and entering his company as an assistanta move that allowed her to be within his scenting range every day.
Five years ago,the disaster struck.
That night,Ryder had been drinking the Packs celebratory mead, lost in a furious, drunken haze. The next morning,he emerged from the shadows and declared he would take responsibility, offering her the title of Claimed Mate.
Elara had been instantly overjoyed, accepting the highest honor a human could receive. But the sickening truth emerged soon after:Ryder only needed a hidden mate,a contractual bond to appease the Pack Elders. If either of them found their true Fated Mate in the future, the bond would be severed.
Her fragile happiness shattered.Yet,she was too weak to resist the temptation of being permanently in the Alphas life. She signed the agreement, and used her human charm to help him convince his parents that the match was divinely chosen.
After the claiming,Elara worked relentlessly, handling negotiations and protecting the Packs wealth. She hoped that if she proved her utility and strength,he would finally see her differentlynot as the small girl he felt responsible for,but as a strong, capable woman worthy of his Alphas respect.
But Ryder remained perpetually distant.Even when they performed the intimacy ritual,it felt like nothing more than a routinea necessary action to quiet the suspicions of the guards outside the chamber.
Later, she discovered the wound that led to her claim.
The only reason Ryder had initiated the bond that night was because his heart was shredded. The woman he truly desired,Lyra,a wolf from a rival Southern Pack, had mated with someone else.
Lyra Thorne was once an adopted wolf pup in his household.Ryder couldnt endure her mating. He almost lost control and Shifted in public,so to calm the Elders concerns about his instability,he hastily claimed Elara.
At first,Elara had been devastated. But she still clung to the belief that, over time, she could win his Alphas devotion. Then, just a few days ago,she saw a message on his comm-link that crushed that fragile hope completely.
Lyra had filed for severance from her Mate. She had nowhere to go,and she was turning to Ryder.
Ryder, without a second thought, was arranging everything for Lyra.He was booking her a hideout within the territory, taking her to isolated pack dinners, walking the moonlit perimeter with her,and even helping her with the legal severance lawsuit.
A month ago,Elara had been ambushed and captured by a rival company's security detail while negotiating a deal deep in human territory.Shed called Ryder for help, but his comm-link had been off.She was left alone, truly desperate, the terror of her human form overwhelming her.
Later,Elara received an anonymous video from a rogue connection. That night, while she was locked in a cage begging for rescue,Ryder had been in the comfort of a sealed room with Lyra, ignoring the primal call of his claimed mate. That was the instant Elara decided this hopeless claim must end.
Elara forced a bitter smile, her lips dry.She turned on her heel and walked out of the Alpha Kings office. She then remotely uploaded the signed Separation Decree to Sierras encrypted server and went back to the keep to pack. She sorted through her sparse clothes, her few human books, and the simple jewelry, placing them into small transport boxes.
But in her heart, there was no sadness,no regret.Just a vast, cold emptinessthe space where the promise of a true bond should have been.
When Ryder finally returned to the main residence,he didnt immediately notice the lack of her scent markers in the common areas. But after a patrol around the chamber,he realized many of her items were missing from the Pack safe room.
He walked up to Elara, who was folding a cloak, and asked casually,Why are you packing up your belongings? Are you looking to upgrade your wardrobe with some new pelts?
Without looking up,she replied calmly,Everything I possess is old.Its time for a renewal.
He gave a careless chuckle.Thats true.Youve worked hard for the Packs success. You should treat yourself.Buy whatever you want from the human markets.
Elara didnt respond, sealing a box with fierce intensity.
That night, after a brief, cold shower,Ryder moved behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist. His voice was suggestive, low in her ear.Do you want to perform the ritual...tonight,Elara?
Elara shoved him away from her body.
Her tone was cold, flat, betraying no emotion. My system is unbalanced.I am indisposed.
He frowned slightly, the powerful scent of his irritation filling the air.Hasnt your cycle finished four nights ago?
Without expression, she replied,I am still feeling unwell.
This was the first time in five years that she had rejected her Alpha. Before, even if she felt bruised or unwell, she would always submit to the ritual. But not anymore.
From this moment on,Elara Vance would put her human self first. She would learn to say no to the Alpha King. She would no longer endure the silent pain for a bond that never truly existed.
This claim was over. She kept reminding herself that the mandatory severance cooling-off period was three lunar cycles. After one more lunar cycle, she would be free,an unclaimed rogue on the human side of the border!

Elara Vance couldn't find rest the entire night. The silent, empty side of the Alpha King's bed had become a frozen wasteland.
At dawn, she rose and prepared a simple morning meal. This time,it was only for herself. The habit of catering to Ryder Thornes exacting tastesthe Alpha Kings unspoken expectationwas finally broken.
When Ryder emerged from the enormous master chamber, his senses, honed by years of Alpha training, instantly sought her out.Instinctively,he wrapped an arm around her waist from behind and lowered his head, pressing a cool, territorial kiss onto her forehead.
Elara turned her head slightly, enough for his touch to skim her, avoiding the full contact of his lips.
Whats wrong? Is your current cycle making you irritable?Ryder asked, the primal radar of an Alpha immediately noticing the minute shift in her body language and scent.
Elara lowered her gaze, feeling a suffocating pressure in her throat. She clenched her jaw,the resolve hardening her teeth, forcing herself to maintain her composure.I am simply hungry, she lied, the words sounding flat and thin.
Ryder didnt press. The morning ritualthe cursory physical claiminghad always been her need, not his.He sat down, grabbed a thick slice of smoked venison toast, and took a bite.
By the way, which subsidiary Clan did you negotiate the Black Forest deal with yesterday?I dont recall asking the Pack Council,he said, his voice casual.
Elara remained outwardly calm.It was the Elder Westons legal team.Do you require the signed Decree for review,Alpha?
Ryder paused, chewing slowly.Just when Elaras palms began to sweat with fear of discovery,he suddenly broke into a rare, easy smile and ruffled her hair.
I trust my claimed Mate,he said lightly, his tone dripping with careless assurance.
Elara dropped her gaze. The pain in her chest sharpenedthe kind of silent ache that came from a bond perpetually ignored. For years, she had yearned for him to truly care about her contributions to the Packto scrutinize her work,to caution her about Rogue Territory risks,or to offer true Alpha guidance. It had only ever been a phantom hope.
After the frigid breakfast,as they stepped into his armored transport,Ryders specialized comm-link pulsed with an emergency code.It was Lyra.
From the other end,her voice was a trembling sob, thin and fragile.Ryder,my former mates Clan is blocking the main gateway to the refuge den.Theyre demanding my returnII dont know what to do.
Ryders entire posture instantly darkened. His powerful Alpha scent, usually a soothing anchor, turned sharp and aggressive. He slammed the accelerator pedal, and the car lunged forward violently.
Do not panic.Stay inside the den and do not let the guards see your face.I am Shifting and coming now,he commanded, his voice raw with urgency.
Elara grabbed the seatbelt, her knuckles white, her face paling at the reckless speed.Ryder, slow down! The forest road is too dangerous at this velocity!.
Ryder seemed to recall his Claimed Mates human presence. He slammed the brakes, the car screeching to a halt, and swiveled to face her.
Take a different transport to the Keep by yourself.I have a critical mission,he barked.
Before Elara could reply,he was gonethe car speeding off again, tearing through the overgrown track, ignoring the Packs safety protocols in his desperate rush toward Lyra.
Elara stood by the edge of the forest road, feeling like a useless discarded pelt. She took a shuddering breath, managed to call a service transport, and headed to the Keep.
The entire day,she buried herself in work.Elara performed her duties flawlessly, but with every task completed, she was mentally severing another piece of her connectionletting go of her loyalty to Ryder and the illusion of the life she had desperately clung to for five years.
It was late afternoon when Ryder finally returned to his office suite. He seemed lighter, the primal worry gone, replaced by a satisfied, almost joyous disposition. When Elara entered to give her final report, she caught the faint, lingering scent of Lyras sharp, rival Pack musk on his clothing.
While flipping through her documents,Ryder abruptly noticed her bare ring finger. Why is your Claiming Ring off your hand?he asked, his golden eyes narrowing slightly.
Elara met his gaze without flinching.Did you not command me to keep it off?You didnt want the lower Ranks to know of our bond. And yours,Alpha, has never left your private safe, she answered calmly.
Did I?Ryder responded, considering for a second, then nodded, seemingly satisfied with the convenient excuse. If Ryder had used his Alpha insight,he would have sensed the sheer gravity of his Matea woman who had always yearned for public recognitionremoving her sacred claim marker. But he was distracted,a soft smile playing on his lips, his mind clearly still dominated by thoughts of Lyra.
Elara forced a silent, brittle chuckle, left his office, and pulled out her comm-link.Lyra had just posted a sensory log on the rival Clans social channel.
In one short clip,Ryder, the fearsome Alpha King, was standing in a small kitchen, wearing a human apron, cooking with an expression of intense focus.Ryder despised the preparation of human food.Elara had spent years mastering the Packs traditional meals for him.The truth now hit her like a physical blow:Ryder wasnt unwilling to cook.He was simply unwilling to cook for her.
Following the raw realization,Elara walked to the edge of the Keeps deep-water training pool. The water shimmered under the fading mountain light, but she felt only the chilling cold of absolute isolation.
She pulled the Claiming Ring from her pocket, holding the cold metal in her palm, feeling the last vestiges of its warmth and the faint metallic tang of his territorial scent.
Farewell, she whispered, the word tasting of ashes.
With all her remaining strength, she launched the ring into the dark water. It arced high against the darkening sky before sinking, disappearing forever into the depths of the Packs territory.
Taking a deep, clean breathuntainted by the false hope of the bondElara turned away. Her heavy boots clicked purposefully against the paved path as she walked away, her chin tilted high. She was done looking back at the shadow of the Alpha King.

After the Packs quarterly council meeting,Ryder Thorne, the Alpha King, cast a sharp, assessing look at the unfamiliar female wolf standing near his desk.
Who is this?he demanded, his voice carrying the low, authoritative growl that commanded attention across the Blackwood Keep.He addressed Elara Vance, who was calmly organizing the mission reports.
Kai,a newly vetted Pack member I trained,Elara replied, her tone deliberately even.He will handle the meeting records and Pack logs from this cycle forward.
Ryder gave a thoughtful, dismissive nod.Thats efficient. You wont have to concern yourself with minor Beta tasks like this anymore,Elara.
Minor Beta tasks.
Elara's inner wolfthe part of her tied to his Packgave a bitter, silent snarl. These so-calledminor taskswere the critical summaries she had meticulously filtered from hours of complex Pack Elder discussions, ensuring his Alpha focus remained razor-sharp.
But to him,her intense effort was merely a necessary distraction, not a valuable contribution.
Kai,the new Pack member, nervously presented the meeting notes.Ryder quickly scanned the pages, his powerful Alpha brow furrowing in irritation.
After Kai retreated,Ryder turned to Elara, his expression shifting to one of easy familiarity. You know my preferences best. The new wolfs summary is too complicated, lacks the clarity I require.
He waited for Elara to take the document and begin the rewrite,as she always had.But instead, she simply smileda cold, brittle gesture that didn't reach her eyesand said,Give the Beta a cycle to improve his scenting of the details.
Ryder looked genuinely surprised for a fleeting moment,a hint of Alpha discomfort clouding his golden gaze, but he quickly masked it.Just then, his specialized communication link lit up with a coded message.
Elara glanced at the screen and saw an invitation to an important Rogue Neutralization Ceremony hosted by a friendly Clan Leader. The message specifically requested he bring a female companion to honor the treaty.
Do you require your claimed Mate to attend with you,Alpha?Elaras voice was soft, laced with a deliberate challenge he seemed to miss.
Ryders expression became conflicted,a war between Alpha duty and private need.
He reached out and pulled Elara into his imposing arms, speaking in a gentle, possessive tone. That kind of event isnt for you,my Mate. The wolves there are always looking for a fight;I dont want you caught in the Rogue Territory trouble.I need you safe, here in the Keep.
Elara gently shifted away from his embrace, pulling just beyond the reach of his overwhelming Alpha musk.
Thats acceptable.I have personal matters to attend to tonight anyway, she said. Then, forcing a phrase of duty, she added,Return to the Keep before the moon is high.
Ryder looked visibly relieved. He pressed a light,absent-minded kiss to her cheek, his scent marking her out of habit, and smiled.
You are so understanding,Elara.Next time, when theres a proper treaty event,Ill take you with me so every Clan can know who my true claimed Mate is.
Elara stared at his sincere expression and suddenly found the entire exchange ridiculous.
This was the first time in five years that he had offered to publicly validate their bond. And it happened at the very moment she had already executed the plan for their permanent severance.
She turned to leave the Alpha's chamber, and without looking back, dismissed him with a promise:Alright,Alpha.Next time.
But in her heart, she knew the moon cycles would never align for a next time.
As Elara had predicted,Rydersfemale companionfor the night was Lyra, the wolf from the rival clan.
At the ceremony,Lyra wore an elegant white silk gownthe color of a peace flag in the Pack worldand clung to Ryders powerful arm in front of the assembled Pack Leaders. Her cheeks were flushed with a triumphant glow, and she leaned into Ryder, causing murmurs among the observing wolves.
Lyras spirit is stronger these cycles.
Yes,she and Alpha Thornes scent profiles are a perfect match!
No one mentioned their history as adopted siblings.
After all,Lyra was no longer legally bound to her former Mate.To the outsiders, they were simply two powerful wolves beginning a new, necessary alliance.
After the ceremony,Lyra, whose emotions were heightened by the ceremonial mead, sat in the passenger seat of Ryders armored transport. She clutched his leather gauntlet.Ryder...I really cant go back to that guarded den.Can I stay at the Keep until my severance is finalized?
Ryders knuckles whitened on the steering wheel.
His Alpha instinct screamed at him to refuse. If Elara detected Lyras rival scent in the Alphas chambers,it would trigger a hostile reactionand the Elders might get involved.
But when he saw Lyras tear-filled eyes and the fragile flush on her neck,he couldnt find the necessary authority to say no.He wrenched the car toward his home territory. However, when he arrived,an unexpected, unsettling scene was waiting.
Elara stood at the grand oak doors of the Keep, speaking with Elder Weston, the wealthy wolf known for handling the Packs most difficult bond severances. They were examining a large, official document.
Ryders heart gave a sudden, hard thump of pure, primal dread. He swiftly exited the vehicle and helped the unsteady Lyra forward.
What in the name of the Moon Goddess is happening here?
His eyes were locked on the document.Who is initiating a severance?
The parchment looked familiar, bearing the faint, cold scent of Pack Law,but before he could get a clear look,Elara calmly tucked it into her sturdy leather satchel.
Sierra and her Beta are undergoing a severance.Im simply advising my confidante on the legal implications, she said, using her friend's name as a perfect shield.Elara then turned her attention to Lyra, whose distress scent was heavy in the air.
What has happened to Lyra?Is she injured?
Ryder hesitated, his eyes flickering between Elaras cool gaze and Lyra's vulnerable presence. Her former Mates Clan caused trouble at the den.She needs a few cycles to hide out here.
Then,as if to reassert his control,he looked at Elara with a patronizing concern and softly lectured her.Even if youre advising a friend, you shouldnt meet a male wolfeven an Elderso late outside the Keeps perimeter.
His tone carried the usual, distant disapproval he used to assert his status over her.
Elaras eyes flickered to Lyra, who was pressed tightly against Ryders powerful arm.The situation was deeply ironic. This Alpha, who treated herhis claimed Matelike a distant sister, was treating his real adopted sister like a coveted lover.
Elder Weston abruptly gave a knowing, dry smirk. Now that I think about it,Alpha Thorne,I havent had the pleasure of officially meeting the Mate you claimed for the Pack yet.

Elder Weston held Elara and Lyra in his gaze, his knowing smile thin and challenging.Could it be that Alpha Ryder Thornes Claimed Mate is
It is none of your concern,Elder,Ryder interrupted with a fierce, low growl, clearly unwilling to discuss the fractured state of his claim with a Pack outsider.
The Elder nodded calmly, his eyes never leaving Elara.I apologize,Alpha. These cycles, open claims are quite common among the Northern Packs.Ryder, you must be
He paused,a dark, dangerous smirk playing on his lips before he drawled sarcastically,Do not worry,I know when to cease my territorial sniffing.
Before Ryder could fully ignite with Alpha rage, the Elder turned to leave. As he melted into the shadows beyond the Keeps perimeter,he tossed a final, chilling barb over his shoulder:If you ever require my services for a severance,Alpha.Come to me.I will grant the Claimed Mate a sizable discount.
Ryder instinctively glared at Elara, his voice cold with suspicion. My Mate and I share a strong, functional bond,Elder.
Elder Weston was already gone, lost to the scent trails,so it was unclear if he had heard.
But Lyra definitely did.
She leaned into Ryder, feigning a drunken wobble. Her eyes, magnified by her emotional state, were watery as she whispered,Ryder...Am I disrupting the sanctity of your claim with Elara?
Before he could respond, her face crumpled in practiced grief, and she struggled to pull away. You are no longer my adopted Alpha...You have a Mate now...I shouldnt be a burden.I must return to my solitary den.
Ryder seized her tighter, his powerful hands gripping her upper arms.
His voice dropped to a pitch so soft it could melt the mountain ice, laden with raw protectiveness.I may not be the Alpha who formally raised you...But you are always welcome and safe within my territory,Lyra.
His burning gaze, full of an inappropriate depth of feeling, made Lyras face turn an even deeper shade of scarlet.Meanwhile,Elara stood a few feet away, observing the scene like a useless human sentinel guarding a bond that didn't exist.
Finally,Ryder seemed to recall her presence.Releasing Lyra,he looked at Elara with a fleeting flicker of guilt.Elara...You dont mind,do you?Lyra is my pack-sister,after all.
He had already prepared the placating wordsthe Alpha rituals to soothe a jealous Mate.
But she only offered him a faint, hollow smile and said,I do not mind,Alpha.
Those three words were light and airy, yet they felt like a jagged piece of bone stabbing into her own heart.
The next morning,Elara woke up and instinctively reached for the other side of the massive,custom-made bed.Ryders side was already cold and empty. The bed only smelled of the residual musk of Alpha sleepno lingering presence. She pulled on her silk robe and walked barefoot down the third-floor hallway, looking down toward Lyras temporary chamber on the second floor.
Through the slightly ajar door, she caught the scene.Ryder, the Alpha King, was carefully feeding Lyra a bowl of a pack remedy for the ceremonial mead hangover.
When Lyra frowned and pouted,Ryder gently blew on the spoon to cool the broth. When she complained about her tangled hair,he picked up a comba human, delicate tooland skillfully tied a complex, beautiful ponytail for her.
Elaras nails dug deep into the soft skin of her palm as she watched, her breath hitched in her throat.
Then, the memory returned. She recalled the time she suffered internal bleeding after drinking too much with the Packs trade allies. The next morning,Ryder only asked the Omega servants to prepare her a common, bland soup. She had once tearfully asked him to tie her hair into a simple ponytail for her,but he had simply stated,I do not possess the human skill for such a trivial task.
Elara stood frozen until Ryder finally guided Lyra out of the room, their forms vanishing down the spiral staircase.
Her legs were numb, but she stubbornly refused to move.
She refused to descend and play the part of the foolish, irrelevant Claimed Matethe useless shadow in their perfectly scripted fated love story.
Perhaps because her mind was elsewhere, lost in the icy solitude of her decision,Elara misjudged the steep, carved stairs as she finally walked down. She stumbled. Then, she fell heavily, her body thudding painfully against the polished stone steps.
Ah!
A sharp, searing pain exploded in her lower abdomen. She curled up on the cold ground, feeling a warm, metallic liquidthe undeniable scent of fresh bloodslowly spreading beneath her.
Her face, usually pale, turned a ghostly white. With trembling fingers, she pressed her lower belly.A horrifying, visceral realization hit her:The life she carried was trying to leave her.
The Mate!The Alphas Mate!
The elderly Pack Servant rushed over in a panic. When the servant saw the dark blood spreading on the floor, her composure shattered.II will call the Pack Healers immediately! And the Alphas private comm!
The servant quickly seized Elaras rejected phone.I have tried the Alpha Kings private line ten times,Mate, but he is outside the range!I have tried seventeen times on your line...No response from the Alphas comm-link
On the harsh metal gurney,Elara weakly opened her eyes and grabbed the Healers sleeve.
II will sign the decree myselfI do not want the pup
Her voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the chilling, crushing weight of a final judgment.
Elara remembered how Ryder had commanded her to prepare for a Pack heir just two moon cycles ago, securing the future of their shaky bond. She had ceased the human suppressant. This pup had come unexpectedlya desperate, fragile link.
Now,it was leaving her, just as unexpectedly.
The lead Healer spoke with grave concern. The situation is critical,Mate. The pup may not survive the trauma, but we can attempt a full bond restoration
There is no need,Elara whispered, closing her eyes.
Tears, hot and silent, slipped down her temples and into the cold metal beneath her head.On the unforgiving surgical slab, the bright, sterile surgical light burned her eyelids. The metallic sounds of the tools were sharp and mechanical, and every movement felt like a piece of her very Claimed flesh was being cut away.
Elara bit down hard on her lip until she tasted the sharp tang of her own blood, refusing to make a sound. She refused to scream. She refused to let the Alpha feel the pain of his dereliction. She refused to feel anything at all.

A moon cycle later, sunlight streamed through the gauze curtains of the Packs private Healers Den,casting a deceptive warmth on the sterile cot.
Elara put down her comm-link.The screen still displayed Lyras latest video log, widely shared across the allied Clan channels. In the visual,Ryder was kneeling, his powerful frame contorted as he meticulously adjusted Lyras laced combat boots, his focus entirely on her. They shared a laugha sound of genuine, unbound joy.
Expressionless,Elara locked the screen. She felt no shock, only the dull, steady ache of acceptance.
Suddenly, the door swung open with a heavy thud.
Elara!Ryder,the Alpha King,rushed in,his face etched with a fleeting,unfamiliar panic.How are you
As he got closer,he noticed the alarming pallor of her skin. Her lips were almost devoid of natural colorthe color of a wolf who had lost too much blood.
His brows furrowed, the instinct of the Alpha Mate finally kicking in,albeit belatedly. Is it the irregularity in your heat cycle again? Why did you keep this from me?
Elara had long grown accustomed to managing her own human ailments.Since she had fiercely instructed the servant to never mention the lost pup,Ryder simply assumed she was recovering from a usual, minor health crisis. He took the convenient excuse for granted.
Elara looked at him quietly.
In the past, whenever she felt weak, she would use the opportunity to demand his presenceto ask him to share her cot.
But this cycle, she hadnt even tried to call.
Seventeen unanswered calls. To the bond,it was no different from calling zero times. Why should she continue to set herself up for the bitter taste of his dereliction?
I assumed the Packs affairs held the Alpha King too busy,Elara said softly.Besides,I did not wish to disrupt your patrol.
Ryders chest tightened,a momentary flicker of guilt hitting his Alpha core.
He stepped forward, the heavy scent of his authority and his territory closing around her,and pulled her into his arms.I am your Claimed Mate,Elara. You have the right to summon me,always.
Elara did not push him away, but neither did she return the embrace. She leaned against his shoulder, her body a dead weight, and suddenly asked,Is the bond of duty the same with Lyra?
The moment the words left her lips, she regretted them.It made her sound like a jealous she-wolf fighting for a better scent mark.Ryder stiffened slightly against her, then offered a practiced, reassuring smile and stroked her hair.Of course,it is the same. She is family;the connection is primal.
Just then,Elaras comm-link chimed.
It was Elder Weston. She answered the call briefly in front of Ryder, keeping her words short and transactional before hanging up.Ryder frowned, his expression hardening.
Come to think of it,I encountered Beta Felicias Mate a few cycles ago. They did not seem to be progressing toward a severance.
It was Felicias solitary decision to initiate the decree,Elara said calmly, sealing her inner emotions. Her Mate has not yet been served the official documents.
Ryder looked genuinely confused. But is a severance not a decree that requires both wolves to consent to the fracture of the bond?
Elara met his gaze with a deliberate, meaningful intensity.Felicia sensed that her Mate was secretly scenting his first lovea wolf from his youth. She could not endure the lie,so she chose to file for severance without telling him.If she had raised the matter,he would likely have used his authority to deny the claim.
Ryders powerful face darkened. Then she must sever the bond!A wolf who violates the sanctity of the claim is worse than a rogue!
Elara lowered her eyes.Ryder clearly knew the Betas Mate well.Given his Alpha insight,he surely knew whether the man carried the lingering scent of an old love.Yet,without hesitation,he immediately condemned the man.
Ryder was not as calm as he pretended to be.
How much longer is Lyras severance cooling-off period,Alpha?Elara asked suddenly, throwing the focus back on him.
Fifteen more days,Ryder answered without thought. It was clear he had been counting down every single cycle.
Elara looked outside at the sharp sunlight cutting through the trees and whispered,Then it will be nearly simultaneous.
What will be?Ryder was puzzled, failing to follow the subtle shift in her meaning.
Nothing,Elara replied.
She smiled faintlya ghost of her former selfand said no more.
Just then,Ryders personal comm-link vibrated. The same Alpha who had ignored Elaras seventeen missed calls immediately answered, his voice dropping to a velvet whisper of deep concern.
Hello,Lyra?
On the other end,Lyras voice was strained and wet with tears.RyderI feel so exposed being alone in this territory den
Do not be afraid,my dear.I will be back to reinforce your scent barriers soon,Ryder reassured her, oblivious to the fact that his eyes had flickered towards Elara, gauging her reaction.
Elara watched quietly. She no longer felt the sharp sting of disappointment, only a cold, clinical understanding. So,this was the truth of the Alpha Kings priorities.
When Lyra was with him,Ryder ignored his comm-link because he knew Elaras presence wasn't important enough to disrupt their private alliance. But when Lyra was absent,he was terrified of missing a single word from her. After hanging up,Ryder hesitated.
It might have been guilt.Or,it might have been the chilling echo of Elaras phrase:A man who violates the sanctity of the claim is worse than a rogue. For once,he didnt rush to leave.
Return to your Alpha duties,Elara said first, dismissing him.Do not let the Packs logs pile up.
Ryder looked relieved, the pressure lifting from his shoulders. When will you be cleared by the Healers?Send me a chime, and I will personally collect you.
With that,he left the private Den without even a backward glance.
A moon cycle later,Elara packed her sparse suitcase, preparing to leave the Healers den for good. She called Ryder three times. No answer.
At the same time,Lyras latest video log was trending across the Clan networks, boasting over 100,000 positive scent markings(likes).
In the video,Lyra proudly displayed theAlphas efforts:limited-edition human trophies(handbags),enormous financial transfers(money),pictures of her global scent-marking travels, and close-ups of Ryder performing mundane human taskscooking, washing dishes, and massaging her feet.
The comments section was full of admiration.
[What an absolutely perfect,devoted Alpha!]
[What a powerful and caring Mate!Im so jealous of her claimed bond!]
Lyra made no effort to clarify her true relationship with the Alpha King, allowing the wider wolf community to believe whatever they wished.
Finally,Ryder called back.
His voice was casual, dismissive, the sound of an Alpha interrupted.I was occupied by a border patrol and missed the calls. What is the urgent matter,Mate?
Sure enough,Ryder had completely forgotten his promise to collect her.In the background,Lyras melodic laughter was clear as day.Yet,Ryder still lied calmly.I am finalizing a business contract. If the matter is not critical, perhaps we can discuss it once I return to the Keep?
Elaras voice was gentle as she delivered the final blow.It is of no consequence,Ryder.I merely needed to confirm your current Pack location.
After hanging up,she opened the calendar on her comm-link.
Lyras official severance cooling-off period had one cycle left.Elaras own Separation Decree would take effect in fifteen cycles.Soon.There was no need for Elara to feel the pain of his betrayal anymore.

When Elara opened the gate to the Blackwood Keep, she almost thought she had entered the wrong territory. The Den,which held the scent of her five-year-long,secret Claim, had been completely contaminated. It was a raw, visceral shock to her Fated Mate senses.
She had packed most of her personal human belongings before leaving the Healer's den,but it was clear that Lyra had taken advantage of her absence to remove even more of Elaras residual scent markers.
Elara walked slowly toward the Master Chambers private washroom.
On Ryders washstand, there was a pair of matching Pack-issued scent stonesone deep crimson, one pale lavenderclearly a set.She looked around and saw that the entire Den was now filled with these paired, coded markings.Matching Pack blankets, carved drinking horns, and communal bedding were everywhere.
Anyone who didnt know the truth would believe this was the established Den of a deeply Mated Alpha and his She-Wolf.
Elara then recalled the early cycles of their claim. She had nervously purchased a set of simple, matching wolf emblems for their Den.
At the time,Ryder had only glanced at them with a cold Alpha eye and said,What is the utility of these trivial, human distractions?
After that, she never suggested another shared marking again.
Elara took a deep, steadying breath, forced her body to ignore the overwhelming, intrusive scent of Lyra that permeated the territory, and went to pack the last of her few personal belongings. She had grown accustomed to the Alphas indifference. After so many disappointments, her inner wolf had gone numb.
She quickly packed the remaining clothes and her precious human scrolls(books)and dispatched them to the Vance Clan Territory via protected courier.
That evening, both Elara and Ryder received coded invitations to a mandatory Alpha/Beta dinner gathering from an allied Clan.Since the invitations were sent separatelyone in the name of the Vance Clan and the other in the name of the Thorne Clanboth of them arrived at the event alone.
When Elara reached the Neutral Zone gathering point, she saw Ryder exiting his armored transport with Lyra clinging to his side.
Ryder noticed her and, displaying a flicker of Alpha discomfort at the public optics, stepped forward. My apologies,Mate.I should have ordered a patrol transport to collect you from the Den.
It is of no consequence,Alpha,Elara replied with a polite, brittle smile.Besides,I secured my own escort.
As more guestshigh-ranking Alphas and Betasarrived, someone from an older, more traditional Pack asked curiously,When did Alpha Thorne and Beta Vance become so close in proximity?
Ryder hesitated. He had promised Lyra that he would publicly solidify their alliance at an official Pack gathering. But when he glanced at the petite, pale woman beside him,his Alpha tongue seemed unable to form the declaration.
Elara smiled brightly, the sound carrying a deceptive confidence.Have you forgotten,Elder?Alpha Thorne is my direct superior now,the Alpha King.Naturally,I follow his command.
Someone from the crowd laughed, easing the tension. The eldest daughter of the Vance Clan working as a mere Beta secretary? Is that not a wasteful assignment for such a sharp mind?
Another Alpha joked,Still marking the Alpha Kings territory,Elara?Surely you know he is already Claimed!
The people around them chuckled knowingly.
Almost everyone in their social hierarchy knew that Elara had fiercely pursued Ryder years ago,an open secret everyone acknowledgedeveryone, that is,except Ryder himself.Hearing this,Ryder froze, the reality of her long-term devotion hitting him belatedly.
Before he could react,Elara spoke lightly, dismissing her past. That was during the last moon cycle. But I have been following Alpha Thornes command for a while now,and I have become too comfortable. Now that you mention it,perhaps I should seek a more challenging assignment in a different Pack.
With just a few words,Elara had expertly deflected the focus and steered the conversation toward neutral Pack trade topics, and the atmosphere became lively again.
Hearing her mention leavingnot just the Den,but his direct commandRyder suddenly felt an unfamiliar, deep uneasiness.
He forced a stiff, practiced smile.Beta Vance is highly valuable.I would suffer a severe loss to the Pack if she chose a different territory.
Someone else asked, trying to fill the quiet void,Why did Alpha Thorne not bring his Claimed Mate tonight?Your Claiming ceremony was so low-key
Ryder responded vaguely,She is preoccupied with Pack matters.
The guests wisely changed the topic. No one questioned why Lyra, who had no official standing with the Thorne Clan, was standing in the Mate's place. While Ryder was caught up in the mandatory Alpha drinking rituals with the other Clan leaders,Lyra suddenly approached Elara.
She smiled innocently, her voice like soft velvet.Sister-in-lawOh,II mean,Elara.I sensed from my Alpha that you and Ryder already signed the decree for severance,is that correct?
Elara looked at the she-wolf pretending innocence and calmly replied,Yes.
Lyra let out a visible sigh of relieved acceptance, her smile growing more natural. That is goodI thought you still felt a bond of devotion toward my Alpha.
As soon as Lyra finished speaking, she acted as if she had revealed a forbidden truth. She shook her head, nervously twisting the hem of her expensive human dress like a shy little pup.
But Elara could clearly see the hidden satisfaction burning in her eyes.
Really,Lyra?Elara asked, setting down her drinking horn,a faint, dangerous smile forming on her lips.It certainly took you a long time to cease your scent marking.

Lyra had not anticipated Elaras inner wolf to remain so calmly subdued.A flicker of surpriseor perhaps disappointmentcrossed her eyes.Slowly, she began to believe that perhaps Elara truly no longer carried any deep scent of devotion for Ryder.
Lyras visible hostility faded slightly. She took Elaras arm with a false affection, projecting an aura of naive vulnerability.Elara, you dont know how utterly I rely on my Alpha
Her voice was soft, like the rustle of dry leaves, but there was an unmistakable, triumphant sense of pride in its cadence.
This cycle,my Alpha helped me secure my severance. My ex-Mates Clan caused deep territorial trouble and even blocked the sole entrance to my temporary den.
Lyra leaned closer, her scent of manufactured distress giving way to pride. But my Alpha hired Elder Weston and had them driven off the perimeter overnight. When it came to the property settlementthe division of the shared territoryhe utilized the Thorne Clans entire network to ensure I kept the best lands.Even my most difficult former Mates mother-wolf didnt dare challenge his decree.
Lyras eyes shone with blatant admiration for Ryders power.
Then, she lowered her voice shyly. To be honest...I never Mated my ex-Mate out of true devotion.I had little choice;the Pack demanded it.But now that I sense the shift in fate...My Alpha and I are not biologically related, nor are we bound by the archaic Mating laws anymore
Her meaning was now as sharp and clear as a fresh wound.
Lyra had only entered the previous Mating contract due to Pack ethics and necessity. Now that nothing stood in the wayno legal tie,no claimed Mateshe and Ryder could finally complete their destined bond.
Elara slowly swirled the ceremonial mead in her glass and asked lightly,So,what you are declaring is...you desire your Alpha,Lyra?
Lyras face flushed instantly,a deep,tell-tale red.
She lowered her head and whispered,I...I dont know.Ive just always depended on him for my safety and protection.
Her voice took on a nostalgic, possessive tone as she continued,When I was a sick pup,my Alpha stayed by my side all night, guarding the entrance to my den. When I was targeted by the rogue teenagers at the training grounds,he personally went to confront the Clan Leaders of their families.Even when I first experienced my first internal cycle,my Alpha ran out to secure the necessary human supplies
Elara listened, feeling a crushing, hollow emptiness grow inside her.She suddenly realized that even though she and Ryder had been pups together, she could never compete with the primal, familial bond that he and Lyra shared.
The Ryder who had always been distant, cold, and strictly professional with her,his Claimed Mate...had been endlessly loving, nurturing, and indulgent toward Lyra.Elara had been blind to this painful disparity for too long.Only after being deliberately neglected over and over had she finally learned to release the claim.
Lyra suddenly raised her head, her gaze cautious and testing.Elara...do you sense the way I look at my Alpha is...inappropriate?
Elara remained silent, studying the subtle shifts in the she-wolfs defensive posture.
Lyras possessiveness over Ryder was so blatant, her schemes so transparent, that she had the gall to declare it openly to his Claimed Mate.
But instead of reacting with the expected jealousy,Elara simply smiled as she calmly responded,It is not inappropriate.I sense...your Alpha returns that affection,Lyra.
Lyras voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper, edged with triumph.Then,Elara...will you release the Alphas claim to me?
Elara met her expectant gaze, the bright, innocent hope in Lyra's eyes a perfect mirror to her own former desperation.Perhaps, she answered lightly.
She didn't announce her Separation Decree outright. There was no reason to hand Lyra the full victory of the Alpha King so easily.
Still,Lyra seemed deeply satisfied with the ambiguous answer.A conquering, radiant smile spread across her face,as if the Alpha's title and territory were already fully ceded to her.On the way back to the Keep,Lyra dozed off in the back seat of the transport.
Ryder glanced at Elara through the reflective surface of the rearview mirror and spoke in a low,guilt-ridden voice.Elara, next cycle...I promise Ill publicly acknowledge our true, binding bond.
Elara smiled gently, her voice calm and final. It is of no consequence,Ryder. Our Claiming was only a contractual agreement for the Pack.I comprehend its limits.
Her calm, immediate acceptance of the lie made Ryder distinctly uneasy.
He hurriedly reassured her,his voice bordering on the desperate. At the earliest,in a single cycle,Ill
We have reached the perimeter,Elara cut him off, looking out the window at the distant gate of the Keep.
One day became one cycle.A single cycle became a full moon.A full moon became a year.
Elara had finally learned the crucial Pack lesson:never wait for promises that will never be secured.Five years of this false claim. She would treat it as nothing more than a fevered, brief dream. And now, after emerging from that dream,it was time to pack her strength and move into the unclaimed wilderness.
The city lightsthe distant, human lights beyond the Pack borderflickered outside, just like the hope she had desperately clung to for the past five years, always igniting, only to be extinguished again and again. Now,she had finally accepted the darkness. There was no utility in chasing a light that would never illuminate her territory.

It was deep in the dark cycle when Ryder wrapped his powerful arms around Elara from behind, his warm breath carrying the scent of rich forest mead as it brushed against her ear.Mate,I want to escort you to your Clan Territory to see your father in a few cycles,is that acceptable?
Elara stiffened at the unexpected touch, confusion clouding her expression. Why the sudden urge to visit the Vance Clan Den,Ryder?
Ryder Thornes fingers gently traced the curve of her shoulder,a possessive, territorial gesture.Youve seemed to withdraw your scent lately,my Mate.I sensed that a return to your ancestral ground might lift your spirit.
Elaras thoughts drifted to the Shadow Glen, the familiar, ancient Vance Clan Territorya place filled with the primal memories of her and Ryders youth.Every ancient oak, every flowing stream, held fragments of their shared past, before the Claim.
Lost in these memories, she heard Ryder add,By the way,I heard a low-ranking Beta whispering that your Alpha Father is showing signs of weakness. It is a necessary time for the Alpha King to check on his well-being.
Father is ill?Elara sat up abruptly, the Alpha-Mate connection to her lineage flaring with anxiety. Why was I not informed by the Vance Clan Elder?
Ryder quickly reassured her, pulling her back into his embrace.Do not fret,Elara.I only overheard the chatter from a low-ranking Omega. It is nothing critical, likely just a small seasonal affliction.
He tightened his grip, asking gently,So,will you join me to reinforce your Clans strength?
Elara was still unsettled by the news, but Ryders surprising tenderness that nighta tenderness she hadn't experienced in cyclesmade her hesitate to challenge him.She nodded faintly. She couldn't fully trust his sudden generosity, especially since tonight,he was merely holding her,not claiming hera strange, unsettling restraint.
Elara clutched the corner of the heavy wool blanket, reminding herself of the Pack saying:When an Alpha suddenly holds his Mate close without desire,he has already found distraction elsewhere.
The next morning, for the first time in a long while,it was just the two of them traveling together into the remote areas of the Vance Territory.
As the car drove through the familiar, old Alpha-family estates,Ryder pointed out a colossal,lightning-struck oak along the side of the road, smiling.Do you remember this,Mate? You used to love collecting the fallen oak leaves here to press into your human scrolls.
Elaras eyes followed the direction he indicated, her nerves slowly loosening as the genuine memories of their pup-hood surfaced.
Ryder continued, his voice soft with distant nostalgia. And you always scented my trail home after the Pack lessons. One time,I doubled back to test your tracking, and you became lost near the river. You cried so hard;I felt the pain through my own core.
Elaras gaze wandered with his words, and the shared memories of their childhood came flooding backvivid, sharp, and overwhelming.
Ryder smiled nostalgically, but then his voice faltered, the light draining from his eyes as if he had just been struck by a thought. And the central fountainWhen Lyra first arrived as a pup,she absolutely demanded to eat the human junk food from the village, despite the Packs strict dietary code. She wore a pristine white dress,a ceremonial bow,and...acted like a completely spoiled Alpha pup.
Elaras heart clenched at the sudden, jarring mention of Lyra.
Ryder had effortlessly tied Lyra to every precious, shared memory. The same moments, once solely shared between him and Elara, were now forgotten,or worse, overshadowed by Lyras invasive presence. It felt like every corner of their history had been scent-marked by the other wolf.Elara felt utterly ridiculous.
They said that an Alpha could never truly forget his childhood companion, yet here she was,Elara, the actual companion, cast aside and dismissed.
As soon as the car stopped at the ancient, carved entrance to the Vance Clan Den,the sharp ringtone of Ryders private comm-link shattered the quiet.
What?Lyra had a minor skirmish?Ryders face turned instantly pale with primal concern.I will be there immediately to secure the perimeter!
He didnt even bother to step past the Vance Clans gate.He was already shifting his weight, ready to leave.Elara,I will make this up to you next cycle,he called over his shoulder, rushing back toward the vehicle.
Elara glanced at the calendar on her comm-link.Today was the exact cycle Lyras official severance from her ex-Mate was finalized.
There will be no next cycle,Ryder, she whispered to herself, gathering the supplements she had brought for her father and walking toward the Den alone.
Her parents, the Vance Alpha and Luna, had been waiting anxiously by the door.
After the strained greetings, her mother hesitated.Did Alpha Thorne go to secure the vehicle?
He was called away to assist his pack-sister,Lyra,Elara answered, her voice calm despite the raw chaos she felt inside.
Her mothers brow furrowed. That pupshe is no longer bound to her Mate?
Yes,she is officially no longer bound to the rival Pack,Elara said simply, then slowly revealed the entire, painful truth about the secret Claiming Contract.
The mention of Lyra and the truth caused her Alpha Father to explode with rage.He immediately staggered, his knees buckling, and he collapsed onto the stone floor.
Elaras heart raced as she frantically dialed Ryders private comm-link.Her husband couldnt have gone fargetting him to carry her father to the Pack Healers Den would be faster than waiting for a transport.
Beep...beep...!The phone rang, but no one answered.Frustration boiled in her chest.Elara then helped her father up and drove him to the nearest human clinic herself.Thankfully, her father was stabilized.
While waiting for the Healers assessment,Elara scrolled through her comm-link and stumbled across a new post from Lyra.
In the video,Ryder was carefully applying a Pack-Healers salve to a small, insignificant scrape on Lyras knee. The caption read something that shattered Elaras last sliver of hope.
[Thank you,Alpha, for securing the perimeter so quickly.Thankfully,it was only a minor territorial skirmish from a low-ranking Beta pup!]
Elara stared at the insignificant injury and,to her own shock, let out a loud, hysterical laugh.
But as the laughter died in her throat, tearshot, silent tears of final griefbegan to fall.
Finally,Elara understood the unwritten Pack law.Ryder had made it ruthlessly clear that Lyras minor problems were always critical emergencies, while anything involving his Claimed Mate could waiteven the health of her Alpha Father.
Ryder,if he knew she came home to officially announce their separation, would he regret this dereliction?Would his Alpha core even feel the shame? She no longer expected an answer.
Just then, her comm-link pulsed. It was Elder Weston.Their relationship had grown strongera transactional bond forged in the cold, legal truth of her severance.
Elara answered. The Elders voice was lighter than before. All the legal procedures are complete,Elara. You just have to endure one more cycle, and you will be completely free of the Claim.
He paused for a significant moment before suggesting,Perhaps we can meet at the border neutral zone for a meal?We could celebrate your escape from this sea of silent suffering.
Elara smiled faintly, the first real, unburdened smile in cycles,as she told him from the clinic.Let us wait until the severance decree is fully confirmed,Elder.Until then, the Alpha King still holds the title.

After that,Elara hung up the comm-link and returned to the Healers Den ward.
Her Alpha Father had woken up.His face was still pale, showing the weakness of his spirit, but his eyes were particularly firmthe strength of a true Clan leader.
He held Elaras hand, and in a hoarse but powerful voice, decreed,Sever the bond,Elara. You must sever the bond with Ryder.
Elara gently held her Fathers hand back and whispered,Father,I have already initiated the decree. You do not need to trouble yourself.
In the final cycle before the severance was legally binding,Ryder had been occupying Lyras new Den,assisting her with settling into her claimed territory, believing he would placate Elara once all the logistical distractions were handled.
Meanwhile,Elara spent her time with her parents.Looking at the white streaks in her Fathers coat and the lines of stress around her mothers eyes,a sharp realization hit her.
Elara had been the eldest daughter of the Vance Clan, groomed for high-status alliances since pup-hood.But for one male wolf, she had relinquished her Pack status and had willingly submitted to a subordinate role, enduring his blatant neglect. She had been a fool to the Mating bond.
Since her decision was now cemented in stone,Elara did not return to the Blackwood Keep, the territory she had shared with Ryder.Instead, she moved back to the Vance Clan Den.She systematically packed up all the scent-marked gifts,Claim trophies, and even the smallest human items Ryder had given her, sending them back to his Den.
Then,Elara carefully inscribed a Final Bond Disruption Letter, much like the clumsy love letter she had written in her youth. She knew that if the first letter went unanswered, this final testament would likely garner no response either. But it was irrelevant.
She was simply providing closure for the younger, more foolish version of herself.
Elara submitted her formal relinquishment of all Beta duties at Ryders central command, said a final goodbye to her parents, and boarded a high-altitude transport leaving the territory.
Elder Weston called again, but Elara didnt answer. She simply sent a message:
[Elara Vance:Elder,my sole focus now is securing a worthy Alliance Mate for the Vance Clan.Your services are no longer required.]
Ryder finally remembered to return to the Blackwood Keep after ensuring Lyra was settled in her new place.Along the drive,he was still planning how to soothe Elaras inevitable anger. He wasnt overly concerned.Every time he had abandoned her,Elara would only pout for a few cycles, and then things would quickly return to normal.
But this time,as soon as he entered the Den,he was struck by a terrifying anomaly. The Den was too quiet. The air was sterile, lacking the comforting scent of her familiar presence. He looked around and found that all of Elaras scent markers were gone. Her small items, her personal textilesall vanished.
Ryders heart sank with primal dread. He immediately pulled out his comm-link to call Elara.
The number you have dialed is temporarily outside the service range
His Alpha core clenched. He sent a desperate voice message:Mate, stop this juvenile territorial game. Are you playing the game of abandoning the Den again?
A bright red alert icon appeared next to the message.Ryder suddenly realized he had been blocked. His face went completely dark. This was the first time Elara had severed their connection so completely.
He scratched his head irritably and was about to rush upstairs when he saw the Pack Servant approaching with a heavy box.
She said carefully,Alpha, this package arrived earlier from the former Mate.
Ryder hadnt registered the servants subtle shift in address. He took the box and eagerly tore it open.On the top lay a single, folded scroll.
Immediately,Ryder snatched it up and unfolded it.Elaras exquisite script filled the page.He quickly scanned the contents.
[Ryder,do you still recall the first time you confronted the rogue pup who challenged my claim in the junior training circle? That day,you stood in front of me,barely taller than me,and growled fiercely,I am securing her claim.
From that cycle on,my devotion to you was permanent.
During the academy cycles, you were injured in a territorial skirmish, and I secretly left the Packs healing salve in your sleeping pallet. You sensed the presence of the gift and asked every Beta who it was from.I was too afraid to admit it,so I had to listen to you and Lyra discussing, blushing,Which nervous She-Wolf has such careful scenting skills.
When you assumed the Alpha title and faced Clan setbacks, you drank the ceremonial mead until you collapsed.I guarded you on the highest watchtower all night.
You looked at me and said,Elara, why are you such a fool to waste your youth on my troubled territory.
Yes,Ryder,I was truly a fool.
I believed that the bond would grow over time.I believed that as long as my devotion was deep enough, you would eventually see me.But some Claims are simply destined not to be fulfilled. On this fifth Claim anniversary,I leave you two gifts. They are at the bottom of the box.
Farewell,Ryder Thorne.
The rest of your cycles, may you both find your true, bonded destinies.]
Ryders hand trembled violently as he held the scroll. He never knew that Elaras devotion had been a permanent, foundational part of his life for so long.He had foolishly assumed her feelings only developed after she reached adulthood.
A sharp, searing pain tore through his chest. He continued to search the box, finding two official Pack documents at the bottom. One was the familiar Severance Decree that he recognized from a month agothe very document he knew was circulating.
But the other document hit him with the force of an Alpha blow.
The other document was a Pup Status Report from the Pack Healers Den.
It clearly stated the horrifying truth:[Fetus Status:6 cycles of pregnancy.Termination/Reabsorption required due to maternal trauma.]
There was also a final, damning note written in Elaras elegant script on the report.
[Ryder, when you were focused entirely on the wolf you chose, our pup sensed the trauma and chose to leave the Claim. This may be her final way of commanding me to live for myself for the rest of my cycles.]
Ryders ears suddenly roared, and his vision went dark with utter, primal shock. He tightly grasped the report, his fingers shaking uncontrollably. How could this be possible? When had Elara conceived? Why was his Alpha sense so completely blind?
He frantically grabbed the Severance Decree and saw the date:one moon cycle ago.How could he have signed such a life-altering document?
A memory suddenly flashed backthat afternoon a month ago.
Alpha,I just finalized the new Clan trade pact. This is the contract. You need to secure your authority here.
Elara had handed him the document.
He had signed it without even a glance, distracted by Lyras latest appeal. He had even smiled, saying,Another quick win,Mate? You are truly efficient.
In an instant, countless overlooked details slammed into his consciousness.
Ryder remembered driving Lyra to the Keep and running into Elder Weston and Elara. He vividly recalled that Beta Felicias Mate had no first love and had not initiated a divorce, yet Elara had said she was helping with a severance.
And over the past moon cycle,Elaras presence had slowly evaporated from the Den,systematically replaced by Lyras scent markers.
Then,Ryder remembered the day at the Healers Den.Elaras ghostly pale face, the servants fearful glances.Ryder grabbed his car keys and burst out of the Den,frantically dialing Elara's number.
The call failed to connect.Instead,a cold, automatic female voice informed him that the number was no longer in service!
