Reborn to Shield You
A moment ago, I was still on the rooftop, gripping the person who was about to jump.
The cold wind stung my cheeks, the concrete edge of the rooftop was icy and sharp, and the sweat on my palm soaked the other person's sleeve.
I gave it my all, terrified that the body might slip off the rooftop edge.
The next second, a sudden shove came from behind. I didn't even have time to scream before I lost my balance.
I fell rapidly, the wind roaring in my ears, and the buildings around me growing blurrier by the second.
In the end, everything went completely black, and my consciousness descended into endless darkness.
When I came to, I was wrapped in something warm and wet, soft to the touch all around me.
But my body felt unbearably heavy; I didn't even have the strength to lift my hand, and my senses were dull and sluggish.
I could only barely make out the sounds outside, and one crying voice was so familiar — it was Tessa Scott!
"What's the point of living anymore..." Her voice was dripping with despair, like cotton soaked in rain—heavy, weak, every word soaked in thoughts of giving up.
I screamed inside my head, "Tessa! Don't jump! I'm still here! You can't hurt yourself!"
But no matter how hard I tried, no sound would come out—I could only replay the words again and again in my mind.
Her sobbing stopped abruptly, like she caught some faint noise, and with a trembling voice, she asked, "Maggie? Is that you? Where are you? Why can't I see you?"
"I'm inside your stomach!" The moment I said it, I was shocked myself.
Then more memories flooded in—I had actually been reborn, reincarnated into Tessa Scott's body.
To be able to return to her side, I even borrowed a huge debt from the Underworld.
I quickly told her, "I took out a loan from the Underworld just to be reincarnated. If you die, we're both finished! I can't repay the Underworld debt alone—you have to stay alive and wait for me to get out!"
Tessa Scott was silent for so long, I thought she hadn't heard me, so long I worried she was about to try ending her life again.
The warm liquid gently shifted—it must have been her hand wiping away tears.
Her voice slowly steadied, still a bit choked up but firmer now: "I won't jump anymore, Maggie. I'll live, protect you, and wait for you to come out safe and sound."
But I could clearly feel this tiny body was incredibly fragile, the heartbeat growing slower, like it might stop at any moment.
No doubt about it, it's definitely that fake heiress Mindy Scott causing trouble!
In her previous life, Mindy Scott was always jealous of Tessa Scott—she not only stole her fiance Finn Collins but also framed her, and ultimately caused her death indirectly.
This life, she's definitely targeting the baby in Tessa Scott's womb again, quietly and behind the scenes!
I clenched my still-forming tiny fist. Even though my nails hadn't grown yet, I could feel the fierce anger burning deep inside my soul.
Just wait, Mindy Scott, Finn Collins, and everyone who's ever hurt Tessa Scott.
I'm back this time, and I'll make all of you pay a terrible price!
Tessa Scott touched her belly, and the warmth from her fingertips through the thin fabric instantly put me at ease.
She said, "Maggie, I'll take you to eat your favorite dessert from before. That shop's red bean paste is especially soft and smooth—you'll definitely like it.""After we eat, I'll go burn some paper offerings for you—to repay part of the debt to the Underworld. Don't let them rush you."
She packed up her things and went out alone.
Now, because she's pregnant, the Scott Family has kicked her out, and Finn Collins ignores her completely, so she's struggling to get by on her own.
But even so, she still gave me the very best of everything.
Sitting in the dessert shop, the wooden tables and chairs carried a faint everyday warmth, and the glass jars on the table were filled with colorful candies.
Sunlight filtered through the window, casting dappled shadows on the table.
Tessa Scott ordered a bowl of red bean paste, gently stirring it with her spoon; the steam blurred her eyes.
Though I couldn't taste it directly, I could feel the sweetness through her thoughts—warm and healing.
Just then, a sharp male voice suddenly pierced the silence of the shop: "Tessa Scott! You still have time to be eating sweets? Have you forgotten who you are now?"
It was Finn Collins!
I cursed him harshly in my heart—that selfish b*stard. In my last life, it was him and Mindy Scott who together pushed Tessa Scott into the abyss.
And now, in this life, he actually still has the nerve to come looking for trouble with Tessa Scott!
Tessa Scott lifted her head, her once gentle expression suddenly turning cold, her eyes filled with distance. "What I eat or where I eat—what's that got to do with you? We haven't had anything to do with each other for a long time."
Finn Collins frowned and scolded, "You're pregnant and still wandering around like this. What if something happens? Mindy was worried about you and specifically asked me to check on you—yet here you are, actually enjoying yourself!"
His words were full of blame, as if Tessa Scott had done something terrible, but between the lines, he was protecting Mindy Scott. He didn't care about Tessa or the child she was carrying at all.
Before he finished, I sent a message inside Tessa Scott's mind: "Tessa, don't bother arguing with him! Call him out for who he really is! Ask if he and Mindy planned your kidnapping three years ago!"
It was like Tessa got the signal; following my lead, she yelled, "Don't use Mindy as an excuse! I think you're just looking for a fight! And don't think I forgot what happened three years ago! I was kidnapped then—was that your doing, you two?"
Finn Collins' face suddenly went pale, his eyes darting nervously, avoiding Tessa Scott's gaze: "What nonsense are you talking about? That was just an accident, it has nothing to do with me and Mia!"
"I'm not making things up!" Tessa Scott stared at him tightly, her tone firm and angry. "You think I really don't remember anything? The location you sent me that day was a trap! When I went to the address you gave me, waiting was not you, but a bunch of vicious kidnappers! If I hadn't been lucky, I'd have died at their hands!"
Just then, Mindy Scott suddenly dashed out from behind a nearby pillar, grabbed Finn Collins' arm, and put on a pitiful expression: "Tessa Scott, don't wrongfully accuse Finn—it really wasn't us.""You were the one who accidentally ended up in the wrong place and got into trouble. How can you blame us?"
"Shut up!" Tessa Scott repeated everything I had taught her with full authority. "Do you think I don't have proof? The person who kidnapped me back then is still in prison, waiting to identify you all! I've already arranged for him to be contacted. As soon as he's willing to testify, everyone will know your crimes—and then you can just wait to go to jail!"
Finn Collins and Mindy Scott exchanged a glance, their eyes filled with fear.
They definitely never expected Tessa Scott still had this trick up her sleeve.
The two didn't dare say another word; they hurriedly pushed through the crowd, fleeing in a mess, their footsteps unsteady.
Watching them run away, Tessa Scott let out a long sigh of relief, then gently rubbed her belly. "Maggie, thank you. Without you, I wouldn't have dared confront them, let alone expose their lies."
I stirred gently inside her belly, as a way to respond.
Tessa Scott, this is just the beginning. From now on, I'll be with you every step of the way, helping you fight for all the justice you deserve.
Just after stepping out of the Dessert Shop, Tessa Scott hadn't gone far when a group of people suddenly rushed toward her.
Without a word, they grabbed Tessa Scott's arm, trying to drag her toward a nearby car.
Leading them was the Scott Family's uncle, who scowled impatiently and snapped, "Tessa Scott! You're a disgrace to the Scott Family! Carrying a child who God knows whose it is, and you still have the nerve to run around! The baby has to be aborted today, so it won't cause any trouble for the Scott Family later!"
The people from the Scott Family trailing behind joined in, their voices thick with disdain and bitterness: "Exactly—an unmarried woman pregnant out of wedlock, and she still wants to cling to the Scott Family? She's dreaming!" "Just get rid of the baby quickly. Find somewhere no one knows you, and stay there. Don't come back to cause us more trouble!"
I kicked wildly inside her belly, using every ounce of my strength to stop them.
Tessa Scott fought desperately too, tears streaming down her face: "This is my child, the hope for me and Maggie. Don't you dare touch him! I'd rather die than terminate this pregnancy!"
But the Scott family didn't care about her resistance; they shoved her into the car and drove toward the hospital.
All the way, Tessa Scott kept crying, and I felt uneasy in my belly, silently praying for a miracle.
When we got to the hospital, the Scott family pulled Tessa straight into the Ultrasound Room.
The doctor placed the ultrasound probe on Tessa's belly, examining her carefully.
Suddenly, the doctor let out an 'Ah!' with a shocked expression.
Tessa gripped the bedsheet tightly, her heart pounding in her throat. 'Doctor, what's wrong? Is there something wrong with the baby?'
The doctor frowned, staring at the screen for a long time, then switched angles to check again, muttering, "Strange, the earlier check clearly showed a girl, so how is it a boy now? This is unbelievable. In all my years as a doctor, this is the first time I've ever seen anything like this."
As soon as those words came out, the elderly couple from the Collins Family who had come along—Finn Collins' parents—immediately changed their expressions.
The sullen faces from moments ago instantly broke into smiles.
Old Mr. Collins excitedly patted his thigh, his voice trembling, "It's a grandson! The Collins Family has a grandson! I finally have a grandson!"
Old Mrs. Collins hurried over to the entrance of the Ultrasound Room, grabbed Tessa Scott's hand, and completely changed her tone, all smiles and flattery: "Tessa, we old folks were just foolish before. We shouldn't have been so harsh with you. Don't take it to heart. From now on, just focus on resting here with the Collins Family. We'll prepare the best nourishing meals to make sure you and the baby stay healthy."
Mindy Scott stood to the side, her face as pale as a sheet.
She gripped Finn Collins' sleeve tightly, whispering, "How could it be a boy... The last scan clearly showed a girl. What's really going on..."
She had originally thought Tessa Scott was carrying a girl, so the Collins Family definitely wouldn't pay much attention.
Her plan was to find a way to get her own child in there later and rightfully become the Collins Family's young mistress.
But now, with Tessa Scott carrying a boy, her whole plan was thrown into chaos.
Finn Collins frowned, his face clouded with frustration.
He looked at Tessa Scott's belly with mixed feelings—hoping the boy could carry on the Collins Family line, yet worried this child might threaten his relationship with Mindy Scott.
I laughed quietly to myself, feeling a secret sense of triumph.
Actually, the gender wasn't really switched; I just used a little magic to temporarily alter the ultrasound results.
I want the Collins Family to take this child seriously so they won't easily harm Tessa Scott or me, and so Mindy Scott's plan falls apart.
This is just the beginning—there are plenty more surprises waiting for them.
At the persistent insistence of the Collins Family's elderly couple, Tessa Scott was brought back to the family to carry the pregnancy.
The Collins Family's villa was enormous, decorated with luxury and grandeur. The room Tessa Scott stayed in was spacious and bright, flooded with sunlight.
There were even dedicated servants taking care of her daily needs, which was so much better than the tiny rental she lived in before.
But Tessa Scott never let her guard down—she knew Mindy Scott wouldn't just give up easily.
Sure enough, before long, Mindy Scott moved into the Collins Family's house under the pretense of "taking care of her sister."
Every day, she dressed beautifully, her makeup flawless, playing the role of gentle and sensible in front of the Collins Family.
But behind their backs, she always shot Tessa's belly a fierce glare, like she wanted to rip me out from inside.
I behaved really well inside the belly, knowing it wasn't easy for Tessa Scott to carry me.
When she ate, I'd give a little nudge to let her know I liked the food too; when she slept, I stayed quiet, making sure not to disturb her rest.
Old Mr. Collins and Old Mrs. Collins saw how well I behaved and started treating Tessa Scott better and better.
Every day, they came to see her in person, always bringing all kinds of tonics.
But Mindy Scott was different. Ever since she moved into the Collins Family, she's been vomiting badly every day and always playing the victim in front of the old couple.
Once, Old Mrs. Collins was peeling oranges for Tessa Scott.
Suddenly, Mindy Scott covered her mouth and rushed into the bathroom, vomiting uncontrollably.
When she came out, her face was pale and her eyes red-rimmed. She gripped Old Mrs. Collins' hand and said, "Mom, I feel awful. I don't know how the baby is—if something might have happened."
Though Old Mrs. Collins felt sorry for her, her eyes held more hope for the child in Tessa Scott's womb.
After a few token words of comfort, she returned to Tessa Scott's side, urging her to eat more.
Mindy Scott saw the scene, a flicker of jealousy and resentment flashing in her eyes, but she quickly hid it.
It was time for another ultrasound, and Old Mr. Collins had accompanied Tessa Scott to the hospital early that morning.
During the check-up, he leaned close to the screen, watching intently, quietly saying to me, "My dear grandchild, move a little so Grandpa can see if you look like him."
Knowing how much Old Mr. Collins was looking forward to it, I quickly shifted inside, and the shadow on the screen moved with me.
Old Mr. Collins grinned so wide he couldn't close his mouth, the wrinkles on his face smoothing out as he said, "Such a good boy! My good grandson is truly obedient—way better than Finn when he was little. Finn was so mischievous, always running around; your grandma and I were worried sick."
I quietly watched Mindy Scott beside me and saw her sneak out her phone to send a message when no one was paying attention.
A sharp wave of suspicion hit me; instinct told me she was definitely up to some scheme.
I focused hard, trying to catch what was on her phone. Though it was hard to make out, I vaguely heard words like "switch child" and "inheritance."
Sure enough, that night I heard Mindy Scott hiding in her room, making a call.
She kept her voice low, but I still caught every word: "Don't worry, I'll figure out a way to switch Tessa Scott's baby with mine when the time comes. The Collins Family's estate has to be mine; that b*stard doesn't deserve any of it! Do as I say, and I'll give you a big payout afterward."
After hanging up, Mindy sneered at herself in the mirror, her eyes dripping with malice.
I quickly warned Tessa in my mind: "Tessa, Mindy's planning to switch the babies. She's already made plans with someone else. Be careful! You can't let her pull it off during the birth. We need to come up with a plan in advance."
Tessa Scott touched her belly, her eyes filled with determination. "I understand, Maggie. Thank you for warning me. I'll watch her closely and absolutely won't let her hurt you."I've already thought it through. When the time comes, my good friend, who's a nurse, will come help us keep an eye on Mindy Scott.
With Tessa Scott's promise, I finally felt a little more at ease.
Mindy Scott, your schemes won't succeed. We're ready and just waiting for you to make a move.
The cold wind stung my cheeks, the concrete edge of the rooftop was icy and sharp, and the sweat on my palm soaked the other person's sleeve.
